Summer is winding down. There are leaves changing already, and the nights are clear and cool. My son starts second grade next week. My daughter will miss him desperately. Our lives are about to get a whole lot busier. So we're cramming as many family activities into the last few days of summer vacation as we can, which is hard with work schedules, school shopping, photo sessions, and dealing with everyday busy-ness.
A few nights ago we took them to the river. It's a local spot, one I've spent countless hours exploring, and now my own children are there - bare feet padding across the "island", finding railroad nails in the water, dancing and laughing and skipping rocks. We stayed past bedtime, even though we knew we still had to bike home. The sun set on them, twirling and running, carefree and alive. So alive. These are the days we will always remember.
